How to make the most of your small kitchen

Having a small kitchen and not knowing how to utilise the small properly is a common problem for people who live in tiny houses. A small kitchen can be challenging to work from, with a crammed space and insufficient storage.

We understand the difficulty of working in a small kitchen, and we’ve put together some tips on making the most of your area.

  1. Ensure the space is brightly coloured

Brightly coloured spaces always appear larger than they are, compared to darker areas. Also, you’re more likely to cook in a brightly coloured kitchen that doesn’t look cramped. If your kitchen is dark and dimly lit, you might want to change that.

2. Introduce more lightening

If you live in a space where you can’t change many things, such as the colour, and you have dark walls, introducing more lights to your kitchen will create an illusion of a bigger space.

3. Use overhead shelves

Create overhead shelves in your kitchen to help accommodate all your necessary and everyday utensils. Overhead shelves are always an excellent option to keep all your stuff out of the way and are easy to reach when working in your kitchen.

4. Optimise external storage

Having a small kitchen means you don’t have enough space to put everything you’d use in your kitchen. You can move your fridge out of the kitchen and put it in a more convenient spot in your apartment. Plates, pots and utensils that aren’t frequently used can also be kept out of the kitchen until there’s a need for them.

5. Always clear out your sink and cooking area

Putting things in their appropriate places out of sight is the best hack for small kitchens. Leaving plates or pots around usually leaves the kitchen area cramped. Wash dishes and clear them out after use, and clean and clear up cookers when cooking is finished.

6. Keep your kitchen clean and tidy all the time

Whether a small or big kitchen, a clean kitchen is the best one to have. Throw your trash out all the time to avoid roaches, bugs and rodents in your kitchen.
